When Emily Thomas joined Invisible’s Engineering team as a principal engineer in 2023, she was ready for change. After spending a year at a large tech company where her role felt more like managing red tape than solving problems, she was drawn to Invisible’s smaller, high-energy culture focused on creating meaningful impact.
Now, a year and a half later, she reflects on her new role as a manager, how far the team has come, and the challenges that lie ahead.
Invisible’s Engineering team lies at the heart of our mission to revolutionize operational efficiency for clients. Spanning multiple time zones, the team is driven by an insatiable curiosity and a shared determination to tackle intricate problems.
"When I joined, the team was incredibly scrappy—passionate, driven, but figuring things out as we went," Emily recalls. "Now, we’re in a phase of growth, bringing in more experienced people to help scale and harden our systems while preserving that drive and passion."
Our clients’ needs are rarely straightforward, and off-the-shelf solutions won’t cut it. They need carefully crafted strategies designed to address their specific requirements. That’s why Invisible’s investing heavily in our engineering and product teams—to develop thoughtful approaches for these nuanced demands while enabling seamless collaboration among our thousands of human experts.
But technical expertise alone doesn’t guarantee success here. For Emily, the team’s success hinges on three defining qualities: hunger, humility, and hustle. When our teams face unprecedented challenges, these traits come together to fuel the imagination needed to create these innovative solutions.
"This isn’t a place where you can solely coast on technical skills. You need to be fully invested in the work and willing to push beyond your comfort zone. You also need to own your mistakes, learn from them, and move forward."
Invisible’s Engineering team operates at the intersection of automation, AI, and human creativity, creating scalable solutions for some of the world’s most influential companies, including OpenAI, Microsoft, and AWS. Their work requires a careful balance between the sophistication needed for enterprise-level demands and the flexibility to support midsized businesses.
"We’re building systems robust enough for the biggest players while remaining flexible enough to adapt to each client’s distinct challenges," Emily explains.
One standout project Emily highlighted is the development of Invisible Workplace, the client-facing app of Invisible’s suite of tools.
"Building Workplace was about defining a new way for clients to interact with us," she recalls. "The challenge wasn’t just technical; it required us to deeply understand our clients’ needs and our unique business model."
In just one quarter, the team built and launched the platform, which continues to evolve to address an ever-expanding range of use cases.
"The next phase of the Invisible Workplace includes features that allow our clients to self-serve the creation of complex processes on our platform, explore advanced metrics and dashboards, and efficiently manage their workforce."
At Invisible, engineers have to think beyond code, contributing to solutions that push the boundaries of innovation with the potential to transform industries for generations to come.
"This isn’t the place for someone who just wants to write code all day,” Emily explains. “This is where you come to build, solve, and make an impact at every level."
Despite operating remotely across the globe, Emily makes intentional efforts to foster collaboration and camaraderie, creating a sense of togetherness.
"We make it a point to have regular face time, even if it’s just to chat. It's about ensuring no one feels isolated," she shares. "We also meet in person to brainstorm and plan whenever possible. Staying connected helps us collaborate effectively and build a strong team culture, despite the distance."
Invisible’s Engineering team is growing, and Emily’s looking for individuals who are ready to roll up their sleeves and embrace the challenges of a dynamic, high-performance environment.
"We’re not for everyone," she admits. "But for those who are driven by a challenge and want to build something meaningful, there’s no better place to be."
